Did you know that the modern 3-point seat belt design that has saved millions of lives to date was a gift to the world from Volvo? Gunnar Engellau, Volvo’s president at the time and an engineer himself, lost a relative in a road traffic accident partly because of shortcomings in the existing two-point belt design. The incident encouraged him to poach Nils Bohlin, an engineer from SaaB to find a better solution.
Bohlin filed for a patent for his 3-point safety belt design on August 17, 1959, and the patent was issued on July 10, 1962, which was released to be used by all car manufacturers by Volvo. The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 made seat belts a standard feature on all new American vehicles from the 1968 model year onward. Even though the design has been improved significantly over these many years, the basic structure is still the same as the one invented by Nils Bohlin.
