Garfield History
Before becoming Garfield, this land was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. European settlement in this area can be traced back to the year 1679. In 1873, the region that we now call Garfield saw its initial development, marked by the construction of seven homes by Gilbert D. Bogart. At that time, it was known as East Passaic.
In 1881, the community’s name was changed to Garfield in honor of President of the United States James Garfield. Garfield was originally incorporated as a borough on March 15, 1898, but on April 19th, 1917, officially became the City of Garfield.
Garfield is home to many iconic people, such as:
- Joseph Villa (1948–1995), pianist
- Miles Austin (born 1984), wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys
- Joyce Arleen (1931–2023), actress
- Al Blozis (1919–1945), player for the New York Giants
